Carmel Valley Retreat53 photos
This home is nestled in Carmel Valley’s mountains used as a retreat for weekends and holidays from their main Palo Alto home. They worked with a wonderful architect on the Monterey Peninsula Paul Davis, Sr. to recreate the feeling of their experience at Bernardus Lodge within many areas of this remodel. We used very rustic alder wood for the kitchen cabinetry, with a custom created door style to meet the needs of the client’s simple, yet elegant taste - she wanted to feel comfortable in her space and be able to live there too...choosing materials that ‘lived’ with her such as limestone for the counters that were fired (roughened) and porcelain tiles throughout the home that give her the look of a Mexican Saltillo, but not the maintenance requirements. The built-ins in the master bedroom where made for us by Draper DBS out of Pennsylvania, along with the downstairs bar area and their son’s bathroom vanity - this black paint was multi layered with three different colors to give the effect of chipped through paints - as if someone had painted these cabinets for many years and the ‘love’ of use started to show through with different elements of color peaking through the black. We chose butternut wood for the bar, game storage and open shelving areas of the home with a hand carved door style called the four of hearts. There are four corners to the door that look like hearts...a Draper DBS exclusive original design. We used granite in most of the home for countertop surfaces. The homeowner had a great idea of using his wine corks from many years of great times with friends and family, and created a ‘parquet’ styled pattern in the backsplash at the desk area off of the kitchen. Brilliant idea that worked perfectly in the space! They have many stories to tell about this cork and that cork...sentiment brought right into their daily lives...
